Why B2B Marketers Can’t Afford to Ignore Email Marketing
If you’re a B2B marketer and not taking advantage of email, you’ve missed the effective-marketing boat (sounds like a fun party, doesn’t it?).
To put it in a way your CEO will understand, if your B2B company is not engaging in email marketing — including email newsletters, industry alerts, drip campaigns, lead nurturing emails, prospecting and promotional emails — your client acquisition and retention will suffer.
Here’s why:
The data supports it
The research is clear — email marketing is vital to effective B2B marketing:
- Per the 2026 B2B Content Marketing Benchmarks, Budgets and Trends report from Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs (1,015 B2B respondents, fielded June–August 2025), 85% of B2B marketers use email campaigns for personalization, the highest adoption rate of any personalization channel measured. For thought leadership content specifically, email newsletters rank second in effectiveness at 54%, behind LinkedIn (76%) and tied with speaking events and webinars (52%). (Content Marketing Institute)
- Email’s return on investment still holds up well against other channels: Litmus’s 2025 State of Email survey, which polled nearly 500 marketing professionals, found that 35% of respondents see a return of $10 to $36 for every $1 spent on email, 30% see $36 to $50 and 5% see more than $50. (Litmus)
I could provide many other studies, but hopefully you get the point: Email is highly effective in achieving B2B marketing goals. And unlike social feeds or search rankings, it’s a channel your company fully owns; no algorithm change, ad auction or platform policy shift stands between you and your list.
People want more control
Our social media feeds are algorithmically based and largely out of our control.
Rather than one dominant platform, people’s attention is now split across a growing number of networks, each shaping what you see with its own algorithm. Pew Research Center’s 2025 survey on Americans’ social media use found usage patterns shifting rather than consolidating: YouTube (84%) and Facebook (71%) remain the most-used platforms among US adults, while Instagram (50%), TikTok (37%) and WhatsApp (32%) have all grown substantially since 2021. That fragmentation means a B2B audience you’re trying to reach is unlikely to be concentrated on any single feed, and whichever feed they are on, an algorithm, not you, decides whether your content shows up.
As people become more conscious of that trade-off, many are turning toward channels that give them more control, such as email. MarketingProfs Chief Content Officer Ann Handley made this case back in a 2019 industry predictions piece: an “email newsletter is the only place where individuals — not algorithms — are in control. So, what if marketing leaned into that inherently personal space?” It’s a point that’s arguably held up better with time than most 2019 predictions have.
Not only is it personal, but it’s permission-based, governed by strict laws meant to prevent spamming, deception and privacy violations. In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act gives recipients the right to stop you from emailing them, and violators can face penalties of up to $53,088 per email, per the FTC’s current compliance guide.
You need that control, too, and email delivers
Unlike social media platforms and other digital channels, as the email sender you have more control over who sees your content and when they see it. Consider Validity’s 2024 Email Deliverability Benchmark, which puts the global average inbox placement rate at roughly 84%, meaning about one in six marketing emails never reaches the inbox at all, let alone gets seen. Even at that rate, email’s visibility compares favorably with organic social posts, where reach for an unpaid post to a page’s own followers is widely reported across industry sources to sit in the low single digits.
As you build your email list, that database of people who are interested in what you have to say becomes a marketing gold mine. Want to start marketing a new product or service? You have a ready-made audience that you can communicate with quickly and effectively.
Email is personal and helps build relationships and credibility
The B2B buying cycle is long and complex. You must stay top of mind with decision makers for months or even years, while establishing a personal relationship built on trust and credibility.
Email allows you to reach clients where they already are, on their terms, as part of a routine they control. They can open, click, archive or delete at their discretion, and if they’re no longer feeling the love, they can unsubscribe.
People like to do business with people they know, trust and like. A post on social media can feel more like a broadcast, whereas a personalized email gives the receiver a sense that the message is meant just for them.
If you focus your email strategy on delivering informative, helpful content throughout the long B2B purchasing cycle, you’ll build credibility and establish a relationship with the recipient. Ideally, your audience will find the content so valuable that they share it with others in their network, expanding your reach.
Email allows you to segment your audiences and tailor your messages
Effective marketing today leverages technology to deliver the most customized message possible. Email offers limitless possibilities for customization, ensuring you don’t send the same message to everyone on your list. Instead, you give them content meant specifically for their needs.
Most marketing automation platforms and email systems allow you to slice and dice your email lists based on a variety of factors, such as:
- Industry
- Role
- Level of experience
- Geography
- User behavior (downloading a white paper, visiting certain pages on your website, attending a trade show)
While it takes time and effort to segment lists, the payoff is significant. Mailchimp’s segmentation analysis found that segmented campaigns saw 14.3% higher open rates, 100.9% higher click-through rates, 9.4% fewer unsubscribes and 3.9% fewer abuse reports compared to non-segmented campaigns.
It’s highly measurable and trackable, allowing you to hone your messaging and strategy
How many people on your list are opening emails? What links are they clicking? Are they forwarding your emails? Are you building or losing subscribers? What’s working? What’s not?
All of this information helps you refine your messaging and strategy. Success in marketing requires you to continually refine and improve, and email gives you the data to do that.
