How Much Does Marketing and PR Cost?

Our Pricing and Engagement Model

At Reputation Ink, we believe in clarity and alignment — especially when it comes to pricing. Professional services marketing and public relations are long-term strategies that require consistency, expertise and collaboration. Our goal is to structure engagements to deliver meaningful results, not short-term tactics.

Our clients work with us in two primary ways:

  • Ongoing monthly retainers
  • One-time projects

Because project engagements require more setup, context switching and compressed timelines, they are priced at a higher hourly rate than ongoing retainer relationships. Most clients choose a retainer model because it allows us to act as a true strategic partner and extension of their team.

Every Reputation Ink retainer is designed to support long-term visibility, credibility and growth. Most of our retainers focus on core public relations and thought leadership activities, including:

While these elements form the foundation of our PR retainers, your monthly time allocation can be flexibly applied to the mix of marketing and communications support your firm needs most. Depending on your priorities, that may include:

This flexible structure allows us to tailor each engagement to your business goals while maintaining a strategic, integrated approach to PR, content and visibility.

You benefit from our access to industry-leading media databases and analytics platforms, so you get comprehensive monitoring of coverage, trends and opportunities without additional overhead.

While every engagement is customized to goals and scope, our strongest and most successful retainers typically begin at $10,000 per month.

At this level of investment, you get:

  • Consistent, proactive outreach that keeps momentum moving forward
  • A dedicated, senior-level team focused on your business, not rotating junior staff
  • Sustained visibility over time, not one-off tactics
  • Clear tracking and optimization, so you can see what’s working and adjust as needed
  • Strategic support, not just execution — ensuring every activity ladders up to your larger goals

Lower levels of investment may be appropriate for limited or short-term projects, and we’re also happy to work with firms to build toward a larger, ongoing program over time. However, sustained authority and reputation building ultimately require consistent, long-term effort.

There is no one-size-fits-all price for marketing and public relations. The cost of an engagement depends on several factors related to your firm’s size, structure, goals and current level of marketing maturity.

Key factors include:

  • Firm size and organizational complexity: Larger firms or firms with multiple offices typically require more coordination, messaging development and ongoing support across leadership, practices and locations.
  • Number of practice areas or industries supported: A focused engagement around one or two practices requires less effort than a program supporting multiple practices, sectors or service lines simultaneously.
  • Geographic footprint and target markets: Firms seeking visibility in national media or across multiple regions generally require more proactive outreach and relationship-building than those focused on a single local or regional market.
  • Media and thought leadership goals: The scope of your ambitions matters. Occasional visibility requires a different level of effort than building sustained authority through regular media placements, bylined articles, speaking engagements and awards.
  • Size and structure of your internal marketing team: Firms with in-house marketing staff who handle certain functions (such as content creation, social media or proposals) may use Reputation Ink to fill specific strategic gaps. Firms without internal resources often rely on us for more comprehensive support.
  • What is handled in-house versus outsourced: The more your team can manage internally, the more focused our role can be. Conversely, when we are responsible for strategy and execution across multiple channels, the effort required increases accordingly.
  • Sophistication of your current marketing and PR operations: Are we building from scratch or building on an existing foundation? Firms with established messaging, content libraries and media presence typically require less upfront development than firms starting fresh.
  • Internal participation and responsiveness: Firms that can provide timely access to subject-matter experts, insights and approvals move faster and more efficiently. Limited availability or slower turnaround can increase the time required to achieve results.
  • Speed and intensity of execution: Launching a new practice, responding to fast-moving issues or pursuing aggressive visibility goals within a short timeframe requires more resources than a steady, long-term program.

With a retainer, you get a fixed monthly investment and a defined allocation of senior expertise, time and resources dedicated to your firm.

When you start working with us, your monthly investment is based on the level of effort required to support your goals. That ensures you have the right team and the right level of focus from the start.

Each month, you receive a detailed summary showing how your time is allocated, so you can clearly see how your investment is being applied.

Because marketing and PR activities naturally fluctuate with strategy, media opportunities and business priorities, some months require more activity than others. This flexibility is built into our model:

  • If fewer hours are needed in a given month, the unused time rolls forward and can be applied to future work.
  • If more effort is required in a particular month, we will always notify you in advance and request approval before exceeding the planned allocation.
  • When additional hours are approved, they are applied against future months’ time allocation. This means subsequent months will have fewer available hours unless the budget is adjusted.
  • You can also choose to receive alerts as your monthly hours approach certain thresholds, so there are no surprises, and you remain in full control of your investment.

Your monthly investment remains consistent. We track all activity internally and can provide a clear accounting at any time, including:

  • How many hours were used that month
  • Whether any hours rolled forward
  • Whether additional time was needed

To set clear expectations:

  • Media placements cannot be guaranteed
  • Results are cumulative, not instant
  • Activity levels vary by month based on strategy and opportunities
  • Your team’s availability and participation matter
  • Discovery and planning are critical to long-term success

For firms with focused, short-term needs, we also offer project-based engagements with a clear scope and budget. Our full-service capabilities include:

  • Design and creative, including marketing collateral, print and email holiday cards, video, presentation decks and social media graphics
  • Website design and development
  • Search engine optimization (SEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) strategies
  • Messaging frameworks, including mission, vision and values statements
  • Rebrands and brand refresh projects
  • Marketing collateral development
  • Launch campaigns
  • Crisis communications

Projects are best suited for discrete initiatives rather than ongoing visibility and growth programs.

You’re not locked into long-term contracts. Your engagement begins with a short, three-month commitment, giving us time to plan, align and build early momentum.

After that:

  • You can adjust or discontinue services with 30 days’ notice
  • Your budget can evolve as your needs change
  • You stay in control of the relationship as goals and priorities shift

Our pricing model works best for firms that:

  • Value long-term reputation and authority
  • Want a strategic partner, not just execution
  • Are willing to invest consistently
  • Have real expertise to share
  • Want to shape how their firm is perceived

Every engagement begins with a conversation about your goals, expectations and scope. You’ll get a clear recommendation on the level of investment that makes sense for you — and an honest answer if our services aren’t the right fit right now.
